In this unit, students will watch videos about solar, wind and hydroelectric power. As they watch the videos they will take notes on the different renewable resources. Afterwards students will have discussions questions to go over.
Teach, Research, Create model is my way of engaging my students in project-based learning. This model also leans heavily on Montessori principles where students guide their education. This resource is intended for the middle grades (5-8). This age-group is able to work independently enough to engage appropriately in this model.
First you will introduce a concept to the students with a lesson. The lesson is included in the teach section of the resource. This lesson will take one class period of 30 minutes.
Next, students will work independently doing research. There are some research activities included, but students are free to research the topic of ecosystems on their own.
Part of the research method is that students have a notebook with them, and they are taking notes about the topic as they go through the activity. As they do the activity, they should take notes on: “What am I learning?” or “What questions do I have about this topic?” Later the students can look up the answers to the questions that they have. This research portion can take 20-30 minutes.
Finally, students will choose a final project. Included are some suggestions for projects but there is always the option that students can come up with their own project. This is the longest portion of the project and may take 1-2 hours to complete the project.
