Hatchet Reader's notebook
The reader's notebook is used for students to engage with the text while reading. There are many ways to use the reader's notebook. Here are some suggestions:
•Use as a companion to your read aloud. Give each student a copy of the booklet. As you read aloud the book, students will fill in the pages. This is a great way to encourage discussion of the text as you read.
•Use as whole group instruction. Each student can have a copy of the book and a copy of the booklet. As you read the chapters together, fill in the booklet and discuss the text.
•Use in a small group setting. Split students into small reading groups. I like to make groups of 3-4 students of similar abilities with one student who is a slightly stronger reader and one that is a slightly weaker reader. They will then take turns reading through the book. I have each student read a paragraph so they can stay on task. After reading for a set amount of time, students work together on the booklet.
•Assign to each individual to read and fill out the booklet independently. This could be homework or it could be classwork during an independent reading time.
